My Change in Perspective About IncarcerationIncarceration affects everyone. It affects the tax payers, the children of the incarcerated, the families of the incarceration, the corrections officers, the police and most importantly whether you agree with it not, you. Incarceration is one of the biggest parts of our country. The children of the incarcerated are the most vulnerable to living them same life. Incarceration does not affect the community positively. Incarceration takes away from our money in education, which therefore translates into people going into incarceration. Being locked up isn't as plain as it looks. Incarceration changes the incarcerated for the rest of their lives. Their mindsets are changed and they no longer are normal.
Incarceration rates in America are the highest in the world. We use incarceration to protect ourselves from the "dangerous" people, but is a man who stole shoes for his baby dangerous? And should be spending the rest of his life in prison? I believe most of us would answer no to both questions. So why do we have the three strikes penalty? And the 25 year minimum sentence for a minor drug offense? Most of the people in prison are in there for minor crimes and should not be in there. I believe the laws should be changed regarding prison sentences. |
