Core Growth Area Chart
Below I have a picture of my first Core Growth Area I completed in the beginning of senior year. We had ten squares to place on the chart, and we had to place them in the areas we felt strong in. The areas that have the most squares are the areas I believed I was strongest in. The area I felt as if I was strongest in was mindfulness. I choose that Core Growth Area because I feel as if I am always people into consideration. Being mindful is something that is very important to me and will always be most important.
Below I have the most recent Core Growth Area chart. I had two blocks to place for English. We were also not allowed to place two in the same area. I decided to place one of the blocks in action. I choose action because during this semester we've had to do a lot of work to do and if I didn't take action, I wouldn't of gotten anything accomplished. Taking action has been difficult because I haven't had a lot of time to do things. The placed the next block in creativity. Being creative is very important to me and will always be very important. I like to make everything I do look visually appealing. I also like to make my things represent me as much as possible. Being creative has also helped me out in my personal statement because it allows me to make it different from others.
Evidence
My evidence for the Core Growth Area "Action", is a RAWR I wrote for a book I am reading called, "Where the Heart Is" by Billie Letts. For the RAWR we had to describe the authors thesis, show the authors passion by choosing a quote and compare, apply or critique the authors thesis. In my RAWR I choose the idea the author expressed constantly, which was the idea that good can come out of any situation. In the book a lot of tragic things happen to the main character, but something good always comes out of them.
My evidence for "Creativity" is a speech I wrote for English. This speech was part of mini project where we all did soapbox speeches. For the soapbox speech we each had to write about something in the community we'd like to change. I choose that I wanted to write about inequality, and how it effects our community negatively. I felt as if I was really creative when I wrote this. Here it is below:
Soapbox Speech
Today I am going to talk to you about racism and stereotyping Almost every person of a different ethnicity than white has faced a time in their lives where they have felt discriminated against. Why is it that being a certain race or skin color automatically gives a person a perception on who they think you are.
The reason why this is such a big problem is because society has taught people to stereotype. Studies show that police are more likely to pull over and frisk blacks or Latinos than whites. In New York City, 80% of the stops made were blacks and Latinos, and 85% of those people were frisked, compared to a mere 8% of the white people stopped.
In order for the problem of racism and stereotyping to be solved we need to love each other with kindness and respect. Take others feelings into consideration. Think of how you’d feel if you treated yourself the way you treated others. Would you be ashamed?
This is important to all of us because no matter what ethnicity you are you can experience some type of stereotyping. We need to change our habits and put our best selves out there to make the world a better place. As the great John Lennon once said, “We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or think its going to get on by itself. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it.”

Personal Goal for the Rest of the Semester
One personal goal I am setting for myself for the rest of the semester is to participate more in class. I do not participate a lot because I am very shy when it comes to expressing my personal thoughts. One way I can accomplish this goal is to just get over my nerves and express what I actually think. I cannot think of a simplier solution to solve this problem.
The CER Six
1. Out of the three main categories, where do you feel you have grown the most?
I personally believe I have grown the most in my skills. Although it is barely the beginning I feel as if I have already gained many skills that I would have never gained in another class. Reading many examples and different pieces of text has allowed me to sponge in different writing styles I really like and replicate them in my own writing. I have even added more things using my new skills in my personal statement.
2. Of the CER Six listed above, which claim can you make most enthusiastically? What evidence could you provide to support this claim?
The CER Six I could say most enthusiastically would be "I can craft a compelling piece of writing". I would say that one because I felt I have done that in my personal statement. The evidence I would use would be my personal statement.
3. Which category needs work?
The category I feel as if I can improve on this most is "I can make decisions based on reasoning". I personally do not like making decisions because I am not good at making them. To improve on this I need to start weighing my opinions make them based of what would be best.
4. Which claim would be most challenging to make and why?
The claim that would be most challenging to make would me, "I can look deeply at a text". I personally hate reading things that I have to make opinions off of and I hate looking deeply at text. Looking deeply at text has never been interesting to me.
