Alexis: How did you get this job?
Ms. Nilson: Well I at first wanted to train dolphins, so I got an internship with the navy and when I realized I didn’t want to do that I heard about the opening for this job and took it.
Alexis: What do you like about your job?
Ms. Nilson: I like how I never know exactly what's going on each day and the variety. I also like learning about unique medical cases and helping the doctors figure out how they can treat their patients better.
Alexis: What do you look forward to everyday?
Ms. Nilson: Getting to work and seeing what my days looks like and hoping for something cool.
Alexis: Did you ever see yourself doing this in high school?
Ms. Nilson: No, I did not see myself working in this particular position, but I knew I wanted to work with animals. I also never expected to work at SeaWorld or be this involved in the marine animal community.
Alexis: What courses did you take in college?
Ms. Nilson: At first I took a marine biology course and I realized that I wanted to study something broader and didn’t like the fact that most marine biologist work with algae and other micro-organisms, so I took organismal biology.
Alexis: What is something you least like about your job?
Ms. Nilson: I don’t like all the spreadsheets, logging, and inventory I have to do for my job it’s very tedious to do.
Alexis: If you could change something about your job what would it be?
Ms. Nilson: I would like to have more opportunities to specialize in or expand my skills so I can leverage myself for my next step.
Alexis: If you could give yourself any advice in high school what would it be?
Ms. Nilson: I would tell myself to volunteer more to get a better grasp of a direction to go in for a career choice.
Alexis: What was the largest struggle getting this job?
Ms. Nilson: Getting into the SeaWorld community was a challenge, but once I was in it became easy to make connections and get the job I have now. Getting into the education program for SeaWorld and my biology background also helped out a lot.
Alexis: How is your work-life balance with this job?
