Ever since I was younger I have wanted to go into the medical field. I have always said I wanted to be a plastic surgeon or a medical examiner, but I started getting discouraged because I was unsure whether or not I would be able to handle the sight of blood or even cutting someone. On May 12, 2014, I was tested to see whether or not I could handle it, I started my internship at Seaworld.
Many people don’t know this, but Seaworld actually does a lot of research in the health of marine animals. Seaworld even does autopsies on animals that die from San Onofre to the border of Tijuana. Autopsies on animals are called necropsies and on that date I would observe it first hand.
I went in blindly to my internship not expecting what was to come. I had no idea I would be cutting up a dead Sea Lion or cutting a brain to get the brain stem, frontal lobe, cerebrum, cerebellum or the pituitary. I realized that I was cut out to pursue the career I wanted to go into. I was good with handling the sight of blood and cutting into something. I had exceeded the expectations I had for myself, I never realized I could do so much. I was so surprised that as a high school student I was doing an internship that is usually taken up by college students. I was so proud of myself for being able to do what I did. I’ve noticed that ever since my internship I have gained so much confidence in myself when talking to adults. I’ve always been intimidated of adults. Doing this internship has made excited to start my life outside of high school. I cannot wait to go to college and begin learning the basics of what I want to do. I am very passionate about anatomy and I want to learn as much as I can about it. I love the feeling of being able to identify an organ in something I’ve never seen before. Thinking of becoming a medical examiner is enticing to me because I would be doing something I love. Although I’ve never done it on a human before, it is basically the same thing. I would also love to see the story the body tells once it’s heart has stopped beating. The body gives a clue for the reason it has died. I would also love to help police officers solve a mystery they cannot see on the outside.
This internship has gave me more than what I could have ever asked for. I never imagined myself cutting into something that is dead or even cutting a brain. It has also gave me a different outlook on Seaworld after its bad publicity. It has also showed me the way it is affecting the people who work there. Although it was only a month, it was something I will never forget.
