Where is it? |
What do I do?Everyday is different at my internship because it depends on how many animals die. My mornings are mostly computer stuff which include logging, doing references, etc. But my afternoons are most exciting because that is when we cut up the dead animals and see why they died, which is called a necropsy. A necropsy is the animal version of an autopsy. The most common animal that we perform a necropsies on are Sea Lions. When we cut up the Sea Lions we take out the thyroid glands, pieces of the lungs, livers, kidneys, heart, etc. Once we do this we store them in formalin and wait until they fix, which means when they are not soft and bloody. When they are finally fixed we trim them and put them into cassettes which are sent to a lab to be put on to slides. Once they are put onto slides they are later read by pathologist to officially determine why they died.
